HOLIDAY MAIL FOR HEROES

The Avon Lions will be operating their 4th annual Holiday Mail for Heroes program from Nov. 1st to Dec. 1st, 2015.  The project provides civilians an opportunity to send Holiday Greeting cards to our military personnel both home and overseas, particularly those who are not able to be home for the holidays.

To take part, simply write out a card to a soldier wishing them a Merry Christmas and a personal note of support and gratitude.  Drop off your card(s) at collection sites in Avon and Avon Lake without envelopes.  The Lions will pick them up, package them, and send them to the various bases we are supporting this year.

All you need is a pen and a piece of paper a to share your appreciation of the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make each day in their service to our country.  It’s free and easy to participate, but please follow these simple guidelines:

  • holiday-cards-troopsPlease sign each card.  Optionally, feel free to include your name and address if you wish.
  • Use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or, “Dear American Hero,” since the gender or branch of service will not be known.
  • For reasons of processing and safety, please provide greeting cards only.  No care packages, monetary gifts, photos or inserts can be accepted. Cards should not be put into envelopes or addressed.
  • Please refrain form choosing cards with glitter, or using glitter to create your cards as it can aggravate health issues of ill or injured warriors.
  • Each card will be screened for safety before sorting and packaging for delivery to military bases or hospitals.

As long as you follow the guidelines above, feel free to add your sentiments to pre-made cards, or make your cards completely from scratch.  Here are a few samples to get you started:

Please drop off your completed cards at one of the following locations:

benningWe need a lot of help to create the cards and would love to have everyone in our community involved in this worthy program.  Last year we collected and sent over four thousand cards to the 3rd Brigade at Fort Benning, which was not able to allow the troops to go home for the holidays.

We would like to do over five thousand cards this year.  We need individuals, families, church groups. bowling teams, senior citizens groups, anybody who is willing to take the time to send our troops holiday greetings and show their support.  Several schools, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are major supporters.

During the month of November, the Lions will have an information table located at American Legion Post 211 on every Friday night-which is their fish fry open to the public.  If you can support our program in any way-it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim Harley
