The Avon Lions are sponsoring a Holiday project to reach out to our active military and veterans over the upcoming Christmas Holiday. We are working with the Red Cross to gather Christmas cards for our soldiers both home and overseas to make Christmas a little less lonely. The cards need to be made out to a soldier and should express gratitude and encouragement with a Holiday greeting.

The cards should not be put into envelopes or addressed. Also, no email or return addresses of the sender can be included – this is not a pen pal program. After the card(s) are made out and signed-they can be dropped off at the following locations:

Taylor Rental
7360 French Creek
Avon
American Legion Post 211
31972 Walker Road
Avon Lake
Avon Eyedesign
36840 Detroit Road
Avon

The cards will be picked up at these locations, or pickups of large amounts of cards can be scheduled by calling Jim at 440-933-5967. After the cards are picked up, they will be sent to the co-sponsor of the program, Pitney Bowes, where they will be inspected, checked for safety, and sent to various military hospitals, bases, and wherevever our servicemen and women are located. Pitney Bowes covers the cost of these mailings. This program will run from Nov. 1st until Dec. 1st to give us plenty of time to meet the overseas mailing deadlines.

In conjunction with this program, the Lions are trying to make sure the Christmas season is a little brighter for the veterans at the Veterans Home in Sandusky. There are 600 veterans at the Sandusky Home and Christmas can be a lonely time for many. The Lions, with American Legion Post 211 have committed to make sure every vet gets a greeting card for Christmas. We will have a seperate donation box at the Legion Post for cards made out specifically to a Sandusky vet. The Legion has a list of the vets names that we need cards for, or you can donate a box of cards to the Legion and we will get them filled out to the vet. We are looking for local groups such as boy scouts, bowling teams, church groups, who would like to help out with these projects. For further information, stop by the American Legion on Friday at the Lions table from 5-8pm, email jimangus59@aol.com, or call 440-933-5967, or contact any Lions member.

Thanks and remember our troops this Holiday Season!
